The Half-Mammals of Dixie by George Singleton,

The Half-Mammals of Dixie by George Singleton,
My father taught me the rules and nuances of poker playing early -- between learning to count and read. He said playing poker doubled his income. As a crane operator aboard merchant ships, he was gone anywhere from two weeks to six months at a time. I imagine he exaggerated more often than not -- it wasn't like we ever had new cars parked outside our apartment back then, or new Tupperware containers in the icebox. But I thrived on his attention when he was ashore and couldn't wait to sit at our kitchen table, mesmerized by all the possibilities of a full house. "Learning when to bluff might be the most important thing I can teach you, boy, " he said often. Then he would tell me he had four aces, I would fold, and he would take my allowance money back. So, OK. I figured one day I'd be teaching my own son or daughter the intricacies of chance and probability. Unfortunately, I also believed in undergoing a number of reckless, hazardous pastimes only so that, one day, I could tell my kids about doing them -- things like cow tipping and driving blindfolded and jumping off two-story buildings and catching live vipers. Evidently, though, drinking moonshine must've made me sterile. Or maybe God just decided that I wouldn't make the best father, or role model, or teacher of any game that involved the word stud. My dogs don't judge my past. I don't even think they care. They do hold with the old southern tradition of human beings playing cards with dogs and start whining early on Saturday nights, especially if there's a fight on TV. I haven't documented this fully yet, but I'm pretty sure that that oil painting of dogs playing poker so prevalent in veterinary clinics was actually paintedright down the road from where I live. For one thing, the dogs in the painting happen to be the long, long dead ancestors of some of the curs, mutts, and strays that end up living here with Glenda and me.

The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell,
The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell,
"The Other End of the Leash shares a revolutionary, new perspective on our relationship with dogs, focusing on "our behavior in comparison with that of dogs. An applied animal behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell looks at humans as just another interesting species, and muses about why we behave the way we do around our dogs, how dogs might interpret our behavior, and how to interact with our dogs in ways that bring out the best in our four-legged friends. After all, although humans and dogs share a remarkable relationship that is unique in the animal world, we are still two entirely different species, each shaped by our individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (like wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. "The Other End of the Leash demonstrates how even the slightest changes in your voice and the way you stand can help your dog understand what you want. Once you start to think about your own behavior from the perspective of your dog, you'll understand why much of what appears to be doggy-disobedience is simply a case of miscommunication. Inside you will learn - How to use your voice so that your dog is more likely to do what you ask. - Why "getting dominance" over your dog is a bad idea. - Why "rough and tumble primate play" can lead to trouble-and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of trouble. - How dogs and humans share personality types-and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than "alphawannabees!" In her own insightful, compelling style,Patricia McConnell combines wonderful true stories about people and dogs with a new, accessible scientific perspective on how they should behave around each other.

Crate training - Crate training is the process of teaching a dog to go into its crate on command and to be comfortable there while enclosed. Dogs, like all canines, are den-dwelling animals by instinct and a crate becomes a den substitute, providing a familiar and safe haven for the dog.

Rainbow table - A rainbow table is a special type of lookup table that is constructed by placing a plaintext password entry in a chain of keys and ciphertexts, generated by a one-way hash. The end result is a table that contains statistically high chance of revealing a password within a short period of time, generally less than a minute.

Table Shuffleboard - Table Shuffleboard (also known as American shuffleboard) is a game in which players push metal pucks/weights along a 9' to 22' smooth wooden table into a scoring area at the opposite end of the table. Shuffleboard can be played either one-on-one or two-on-two.

High Table - At Oxford and Cambridge colleges, and more traditional academic institutions, High Table is a table on a raised platform at the end of the dining hall for the use of fellows (members of the Senior Common Room) and their guests. On more formal evening occasions, dinner jackets are worn.
