Contour Farming

This is the first history of the Jewish agricultural colonies that were established in Crimea and Southern Ukraine in 1924 and that, fewer than 20 years later, ended in tragedy. Jonathan Dekel-Chen opens an extraordinary window on Soviet rural life during these turbulent years, and he documents the remarkable relations that developed among the American-Jewish sponsors of the ambitious project, the Soviet authorities, and the colonists themselves. Drawing on extensive and largely untouched archives and a wealth of previously unpublished oral histories, the book revises what has been understood about these agricultural settlements. Dekel-Chen offers new conclusions about integration and separation among Soviet Jews, the contours of international relations, and the balance of political forces within the Jewish world during this volatile period.

In the late nineteenth century, migrants from Jamaica, Colombia, Barbados, and beyond poured into Caribbean Central America, building railroads, digging canals, selling meals, and farming homesteads. On the rain-forested shores of Costa Rica, U.S. entrepreneurs and others established vast banana plantations. Over the next half-century, short-lived export booms drew tens of thousands of migrants to the region. In Port Limn, birthplace of the United Fruit Company, a single building might house a Russian seamstress, a Martinican madam, a Cuban doctor, and a Chinese barkeep--together with stevedores, laundresses, and laborers from across the Caribbean. Tracing the changing contours of gender, kinship, and community in Costa Rica's plantation region, Lara Putnam explores new questions about the work of caring for children and men and how it fit into the export economy, the role of kinship as well as cash in structuring labor, the social networks that shaped migrants' lives, and the impact of ideas about race and sex on the exercise of power. Based on sources that range from handwritten autobiographies to judicial transcripts and addressing topics from intimacy between prostitutes to insults between neighbors, the book illuminates the connections between political economy, popular culture, and everyday life.

Contour plowing - Contour plowing or contour farming is the farming practice of plowing across a slope following its contours. The rows thus formed have the effect of slowing water run-off during rainstorms so that the soil is not washed away and allows the water to percolate into the earth.

Contour bunding - Contour bunding is an agrarian technique to prevent erosion and promote better utilization of rainwater. Farmers put stones around the contours of slopes to, keep rainwater and accompanying soil within the farming area long enough for it to soak in.

Extensive farming - Extensive farming (as opposed to Intensive farming) is an agricultural production system over a vast area of land, such as the Great Plains. Unlike intensive farming, which must use chemical fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, plant growth regulators and pesticides to produce a large proportion of crop per unit area to cover the costs of high property value, extensive farming is practised on low-cost land and so doesn't require chemical stimulants.
